Shockwave Therapy

For tendon pain that hasn't moved. Shockwave therapy delivers focused acoustic pulses into damaged tendon and soft tissue, kickstarting a healing response in chronic injuries that have plateaued.

What it is

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy uses a handheld device to send high-energy sound waves into injured soft tissue. The pulses break down old scar tissue and increase local blood flow, prompting the body to restart a repair process that has stalled.

It's most often reached for with chronic, stubborn injuries — the ones that haven't responded well to rest, stretching or standard manual therapy.

A session takes about 8 to 10 minutes: gel is applied to the area, and the applicator delivers pulses at an intensity your physiotherapist adjusts to your tolerance.

Most plans involve three to five sessions spaced roughly a week apart, sometimes paired with specific loading exercises between visits. Results build cumulatively rather than all at once, though some people notice a difference after the first session.

How Do I Know If Shockwave Therapy Is Right for Me?

Shockwave isn't suitable during pregnancy, for anyone under 18 near an open growth plate, over an area with a metal implant, active infection, tumour, or a bleeding/nerve disorder, or while on blood-thinning medication. Avoid strenuous activity on the treated area for about 48 hours afterward.
