Dry Needling Physiotherapy

Release the knot, not just the symptom. Dry needling uses a fine, solid needle placed directly into a tight muscle band to release trigger points that manual therapy alone can't reach.

What it is

What is Dry Needling Physiotherapy?

Dry needling uses the same thin, solid needles as acupuncture, but the approach behind it is different: rather than working along traditional meridian points, your physiotherapist places the needle directly into a tight muscle band or trigger point identified through assessment.

It targets a wide range of muscular pain, including strains, sports injuries, neck and back pain, whiplash, and repetitive strain conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome.

When the needle reaches the trigger point, you'll often feel a brief muscle twitch lasting a couple of seconds — a sign the tight band has released — sometimes with mild discomfort. Your physiotherapist follows up with specific exercises to help the muscle hold the change.

You may feel some soreness for up to 48 hours after treatment, similar to a hard workout, along with the possibility of mild bruising — both are normal and settle on their own. Avoid strenuous exercise right after your session.

How Do I Know If Dry Needling Physiotherapy Is Right for Me?

Dry needling isn't the right fit for everyone — tell your physiotherapist if you're pregnant, have a needle phobia, or take blood-thinning medication, so they can adjust or choose an alternative approach.

Good to know

The needles look the same, but the approach is different — dry needling targets specific muscle trigger points identified through a physical assessment, rather than following traditional acupuncture points.
Will I be sore afterward?
Some soreness for a day or two is common and expected, similar to how a new exercise feels. It typically settles within 48 hours.
