Active/Passive Assisted Stretching

Range of motion, restored with help. Your therapist stabilizes and guides the stretch so tight tissue lengthens further and more safely than it would on its own.

What it is

What is Active/Passive Assisted Stretching?

Assisted stretching combines two approaches: active stretching, where you gently contract a muscle to create the movement, and passive stretching, where your therapist moves the joint through its range while you relax into it.

Your therapist stabilizes the area around the muscle being stretched, then guides one or more joints through a controlled range of motion. You're asked to breathe steadily and let go of tension rather than resist — that's what lets the tissue actually lengthen.

How long each stretch is held depends on what the tissue needs — longer, sustained holds generally move things along faster than a quick pull and release.

You'll be positioned comfortably on the treatment table while your therapist moves you through a series of guided stretches, checking in on comfort throughout. It should feel like a firm, steady pull — never sharp or painful.

Good to know

Is Active/Passive Assisted Stretching Safe?

Will it hurt?
It shouldn't. You should feel a stretch, not pain — tell your therapist if anything feels sharp and they'll ease off.
Do I need to do anything, or is it all passive?
It's a mix. Some stretches ask you to gently engage the muscle; others, your therapist does all the moving while you relax.
