Tuina

Chinese medical massage, aimed at the pattern behind the pain. Tuina uses hands-on manipulation — rolling, kneading, pressing — to move qi and blood where they've stalled, easing tension and restoring function rather than just relaxing you.

What it is

What is Tuina?

Tuina is one of the four pillars of Traditional Chinese Medicine, alongside acupuncture, herbal medicine and qi gong. The name translates roughly to "push and pull," a fair description of the hands-on work involved — this isn't a relaxation massage, it's a diagnostic and therapeutic technique aimed at correcting the pattern behind your complaint.

TCM sees pain and dysfunction as a sign that qi and blood aren't flowing properly through a region of the body. Tuina works to clear that blockage directly, using firm, targeted manipulation rather than passive stretching.

Your practitioner combines gentler, sustained pressure with firmer, more active techniques — rolling, kneading, pressing and one-finger work — chosen based on how your tissue responds. Oil is often used to help the hands move smoothly over the treatment area.

You'll stay clothed for most tuina work. Your practitioner assesses the affected area first, then works through a combination of gentle, sustained techniques and firmer, active ones depending on what your tissue needs.

Tuina is generally well tolerated, but tell us about any existing injuries, skin conditions or health concerns before you start — we'll adjust pressure and technique accordingly, or suggest a different treatment if tuina isn't the right fit.

Good to know

Is Tuina Safe?

Is tuina the same as a regular massage?
No. It's more targeted and diagnostic — your practitioner is working to correct a specific pattern rather than provide general relaxation, though it can feel just as good.
Does tuina hurt?
It shouldn't. Some of the firmer techniques feel intense in the moment, but tell your practitioner if anything crosses from firm pressure into pain.
Can it be combined with acupuncture?
Yes — the two are often used in the same visit, since both work on the same underlying qi-and-blood framework.
